The term handheld microphone generally means any microphone that's supposed to be held in the hand while picking up sound. Handheld microphones are used in a huge variety of settings, from musical performances to television interviews.
Supercardioid microphones offer a narrower pickup than cardioids and a greater rejection of ambient sound. But they also have some pickup directly at the rear, hence it is important to place monitor speakers correctly. Supercardioids are most suitable when single sound sources need to be picked up in loud environments. They are very resistant to feedback.
Condenser microphones are more sensitive than Dynamic microphones. They use an electrically-charged diaphragm & backplate assembly to form a sound sensitive capacitor. When sound sets the diaphragm in motion, the distance between the diaphragm and the backplate changes. This variation in spacing changes the capacity of the capacitor, and produces the needed electrical signal. All condenser microphones need to be powered: either by batteries in the microphone or by externally provided phantom power.
A microphone with tailored frequency response is usually designed to enhance a sound source in a particular application. For instance, a microphone may have a peak in the 2 – 8 kHz range to increase intelligibility for live vocals.

How does it differ to the Beta 58A?

The Beta 58 uses a dynamic element; the Beta 87 is a condenser. That’s why they sound different. It will be a matter of personal preference, not a technical choice. Auditioning both at a Shure dealer is our best advice.

I connected the mic but it didn´t work. What should I do?

Probably no phantom power has been applied. This is needed to make condenser microphones work.

What is the difference between the 'A' and 'C' version?

The main difference between Beta 87A and Beta 87C is that the Beta87A uses a supercardioid polar pattern and Beta 87C uses a cardioid polar pattern.

When should I use the 'A' and when should I use the 'C' version?

The 87C was introduced for performers using in-ear monitors. In brief, a cardioid mic is often preferred by in-ear monitor users as it sounds more "natural" with the in-ear mix. If you use floor monitors, the BETA 87A may be a better choice as it will often provide a bit more gain before feedback than the BETA 87C. However, which model works better for you can only be decided via auditioning the mics.
